Sadness as Tom Heggie, Highland councilor and head of Nairn area committee, dies

THE community of Nairn was shocked and saddened to learn today of the passing of Highland Council Nairn Area Committee Leader Tom Heggie.

An ordained minister and retired teacher, Councilor Heggie was nearing the end of his first term in the local authority as an independent councillor.

Cllr Heggie first came to Nairn as a young pastor at Nairn Old Parish Church and later pursued a teaching career at Forres Academy before returning to ministry at Nairn United Reformed Church where he led a major campaign to upgrade and modernize the old Congregational Church building, create a community hub used by various groups.

He returned again to continue his teaching career at Nairn Academy and on retirement was elected to serve on the council in the 2017 local elections.

During his tenure, he campaigned vigorously for a new high school for the town.

Nairn Academy has been included in Phase Two of the Scottish Government’s Learning Investment Program announced in December 2020, and funding for the project is included in the reprofiled Capital Program approved by Council last month. last.

His wife Mary and her family are asking people to give them time to come to terms with what happened and to refrain from calling at this time.
